How to use it
- Ask the doctor or nurse what to do in a power cut, and write their plan on the sheet.
- Write down a safe place your parent could go, who will take them, and a nearby helper, with phone numbers.
- List the medicines, equipment, and supplies they must take, and the equipment or supply company’s number.
- Note where the packed bag, care papers, and spare keys are.
Quick care note
Follow local alerts. Never use a grill or generator in the home or garage. Get help early if a power cut could put your parent at risk.
Getting ready before the storm
If a storm cuts off power or help, a written plan saves guesswork. Decide where your parent can go, who can drive, and who nearby will check in, with a backup person, and make sure the place can meet your parent’s needs.
If care equipment needs power, ask the company that supplies it about safe backups and how long they last. Ask the pharmacist about medicines, including any that need to stay cold. Pack a bag with food, water, a flashlight, care papers, care supplies, glasses, chargers, and pet needs.
Share the plan with the people who agreed to help, and follow local orders to leave. A power company list does not promise quick repairs. Run a portable generator outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents, and never inside a home or garage.
