Quick answers

Frequently Asked Questions

The three questions every caregiver asks first.

The 40-70 Rule says that by the time you are 40 or your parent is 70, you should start having honest conversations about aging โ€” finances, driving, health directives, where they want to live. It was coined by Home Instead Senior Care to push families past the awkwardness before a crisis forces the talk. Start with one topic, not all of them. Ask open questions like "What matters most to you about how you live in the next ten years?" If your parent is already past 70 and you have not started, today is the day. Here is how to open the conversation without it blowing up.
Stop trying to do it alone. Caregiver burnout affects about 40% of family caregivers, and the fix is not willpower โ€” it is structure. Pick three things: one weekly task you can hand off (groceries, pharmacy runs, bill pay), one daily 20-minute break that is non-negotiable, and one person you can text when you are losing it. Use respite care through your local Area Agency on Aging (call 1-800-677-1116) โ€” many counties subsidize a few hours a week. And separate the medical from the emotional. You cannot fix your dad's Parkinson's. You can make sure he is not alone all day. The seven signs of burnout are the early warning.
No, Medicare does not pay family members to provide care. But Medicaid does in most states through a program called Self-Directed Services or Consumer-Directed Care, where your parent (if Medicaid-eligible) can hire you as their paid caregiver. Pay is usually $12-$20 an hour. Also check the VA's Aid and Attendance benefit if your parent is a veteran โ€” up to $2,727/month for a married couple in 2026 โ€” and ask your parent's long-term care insurance whether it covers family caregivers. Start at your state Medicaid office or call 1-800-MEDICARE to get pointed to the right program. Long-term care insurance, decoded.
